New York, RakyatNTT.ID – The US stock market closed higher on Friday despite volatile trading, as investors navigated uncertainty on the third day of the ongoing government shutdown.
According to Reuters, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 238.56 points, or 0.51%, to 46,758.28. The S&P 500 inched up 0.44 points, or 0.01%, to 6,715.79, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 63.54 points, or 0.28%, to 22,780.51.
Tech Stocks Weigh on S&P 500
Technology stocks were the main drag on the S&P 500, with Applied Materials falling 2.7% after forecasting a $600 million revenue loss for fiscal 2026. Tesla shares also declined 1.4%, reflecting continued pressure on the tech-heavy Nasdaq.
Utilities Gain as Safe Haven
In contrast, the utilities sector rose 1.2%, emerging as the top-performing group within the S&P 500 and helping offset declines in technology.
Key Economic Data Delayed
The release of the US nonfarm payrolls report for September was postponed due to the partial government shutdown, leaving investors without a key piece of labor market data.
Meanwhile, a survey from the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) showed the services sector employment index contracted for the fourth straight month, reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve may move toward further interest rate cuts. (*/rnc)
